Energy Design Architect: Converting Light Into Energy

Going Green had the chance to sit down with Richard Brown, the CEO of Sunworks International Solar Consulting, to talk about his experience working in solar, and how his background in energy design translated to converting light into energy.

How did you get started in CleanTech?

I’m an energy design architect who specializes in solar PV and thermal design and installation. I worked in residential and commercial construction since graduating from the University of Michigan back in 1980. I came out to California in 1988 to attend the USC business school on a MBA scholarship.

What caused you to get into your industry? 

Took a class in solar design and installation when I got laid off during the 2008 recession. I felt that the solar industry was going to grow larger over the next 20 years and would provide a world of new opportunities. It led to me passing the NABCEP exam and being asked to teach the class I had just completed. This and my past experience led to my first solar job as a project manager with Martifer Solar.

What trends are you seeing in your industry? 

Continued growth overall, even though the apartment and condo market is still very slow in growing. Consolidation in the installation business as successful businesses take over other competitors. Prices for the work are constantly going down as competition continues to drive bids down. Batteries are starting to be seen as an essential component of a system.

What is one Action Item for our listeners and viewers to take away from this conversation? 

Relialize that having a solar system is now becoming the base standard for new homes. Exciting new technologies are being introduced like wind for the home, and new types of solar like tiles/roofing/tracking, etc…

What is a fun fact about you? 

I love sports cars – drive a convertible daily.

Where do you see your industry ten years from now? 

A major job provider as the industry spreads from California and Hawaii to the other 48 states. EV chargers are everywhere, solar roads have been built in many cities, skyscrapers are now being built with PV modules covering all the walls both windows and between panels.
