This week, we had the chance to connect with Rowena Pullan, the Chief Brand Guardian for a company called CH4 Global. The mission of CH4 is to provide solutions for zero methane agriculture.
In order to understand the significance of the incredible the work CH4 puts forth, we have to first understand the problems: methane and industrial agriculture. According to the EPA, livestock contributes to 36% of all methane emissions and a way to reduce this is by “adjusting feeding practices and other management methods to reduce the amount of methane resulting from enteric fermentation.” By supplementing livestock feed with Asparagopsis seaweed, CH4 is able to drastically reduce methane emissions and positively impact climate change!
Let’s get to know the brilliant mind behind building this brand, Rowena Pullan!
Tell us a little bit about you, your background, and your current role:
I retired from corporate life with a goal to give back to the community. Then CH4 Global came calling and I realized I had a unique opportunity to give back to the global community. CH4 Global is on a mission to create Asparagopsis seaweed based supplements for ruminants (like cows, sheep and goats) to slash their methane emissions and positively impact climate change. The world’s cattle are heating our planet more than the USA, Europe and India combined. Asparagopsis fed to cattle has been shown to reduce their methane burps up to 90%. Feeding just 10% of the world’s cattle Asparagopsis will be like taking 100 million combustion engine cars off the road.
What is a fun fact about you?
I lived in 6 countries by the time I was 14. That has given me a global view of the world and life.
Why do you think climate change and sustainability is such an important topic today?
Earth is our home. It is the only home we have. Following COP26 the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5C is on life support. On top of that the risk that we will hit a tipping point from which the world can’t recover has increased. As a parent I feel that progress on mitigating climate change is the single most important legacy we can leave our children and future generations.
What do you envision your industry looking like 10 years from now?
I hope this industry will span the globe and will have largely neutralized the climate impact of dairy and beef products. If we can achieve this then we will have protected critical sources of protein for the global population while also protecting the planet.
What can the average person do to make a difference?
Reduce, recycle and reuse. Reduce the stuff we buy, recycle as much as possible and reuse or repurpose things rather than throwing them away. Also advocate as you can: Tell friends about the new bamboo toilet paper you found; write to your local government representative; you might be surprised at the impact you can have.
