Green.Org met with business mentor and director of Boom & Partners, Kevin R Smith, about the shift towards a future of sustainable investment.
Hi Kevin, thanks for joining us today. Tell us a little bit about you and your background.
I have worked in and around finance and business for my whole career and worked on four continents. This has given me great learning opportunities and a thirst for more knowledge which I use on a daily basis when working with businesses looking to scale.
What is a fun fact about you?
I am lucky enough to be extremely well travelled for both business and work and that has enabled me to experience and learn about many different cultures, climates, histories, and geographies and how they are intertwined. I am now addicted to travel and once experienced -48c which was rather cold!
Why do you think climate change and sustainability is such an important topic today?
It is clear that humans have been too greedy in the plundering of the planet’s resources whilst also not considering the consequences. Those consequences are now all too clear and everything must be done to change to sustainable processes and a circular economy.
What do you envision your industry looking like 10 years from now?
So many new businesses are recognising the tremendous shift by consumers towards sustainability and their business reflects this. It is often smaller business that force the larger ones to eventually react. As such, investors the world over see sustainable businesses or those with good ESG as being the ones with the best future and so the ones to invest in. These businesses and investment funds will continue to rise.
What can the average person do to make a difference?
None of us are perfect but if each of us considers what we do and how we go about it it will have a major impact. Consider more carefully what we buy and where from, recycle and reuse when possible, force retailers to stop using plastics so much and reduce packaging, and all those steps help.
Thanks so much for joining us Kevin, to talk about how the investment world is shifting towards sustainability.
